Cargill Value Investment is a world-leading investor in management and credit-intensive assets. The group was founded in 1987 from Cargill’s proprietary high-yield trading operations and achieved critical mass in the wake of the United States financial crisis of the early 1990s. Throughout the decade, Cargill Value Investment expanded to include high-yield distressed corporate obligations, credit-intensive loan portfolios and opportunistic real estate across the globe. With this growth came the challenge of distributing and managing information in a decentralized environment.

In our pursuit of a solution to this business problem, we developed a data warehouse. However, this only solved half the problem. We’ve been using XLCubed for almost a year now as a core component of our Management Accounting infrastructure. This tool was instrumental in allowing us to leverage our investment in Analysis Services cubes, while nicely plugging into our existing Excel workflow.

Formula based reports give us the ability to quickly query hundreds of thousands of records from multiple cubes and consolidate those into pre-formatted Excel spreadsheets. Gridbased slicing and dicing is also a powerful analysis tool that bridges most gaps left open by traditional pivot tables when faced with multi-dimensional sources. The Rank Group is a leading European gaming and betting company, headquartered in Great Britain. Rank’s businesses include a number of established brands in gaming and leisure. These include Mecca Bingo, Top Rank España, Grosvenor and G Casinos and Blue Square.. Rank engaged XLCubed to work with internal IT for data warehouse and cube development and the business for report development. With XLCubed Web now deployed across bingo clubs and casinos and XLCubed for Excel used throughout Ranks HQ in Berkshire we are now expanding the report deployment to many different areas of the business.

XLCubed has enabled the business to take ownership of report creation which in turn allows our BI team more time to focus on the ETL, and Cube Design.
The significant new functionality in Version 6 of XLCubed along with our roll out of Excel 2010 will greatly enhance our reporting capability and enable us to deliver reports faster than ever before. Integrating with our Sharepoint site enables access from anywhere within Rank group, allowing our clubs to manage performance directly while giving management a centralised view of the business.

Our reporting and analysis team were previously dependent on Excel linked to our financial ledgers to produce management information. As part of a project to improve data availability and consistency, we decided to introduce a data warehouse.

The services team at XLCubed worked very closely with us to understand our process and requirements, and design and develop the data warehouse and ETL process. The resultant solution, together with the XLCubed client tools, gives us a powerful and flexible way to analyse our data in minutes rather than the hours previously required, alongside the ability to update our forecast and budget information in the same environment.
