The CIO dashboard is from a design by field expert Stephen Few in his book “Information Dashboard Design”, which is essential reading for the thought processes and guidelines of effective dashboard design. Stephen identified some of the key area of operational interest for a typical CIO, and brought the information together clearly and concisely on one page.

This version is implemented with Excel and in-cell Charting.

This version of the dashboard has no data connectivity, all data is held on a hidden sheet ‘Data’. The report makes extensive use of Edward Tufte’s Sparklines, for trending and Stephen Few’s Bullet Graphs for performance versus target, both implemented through  in-cell Charting. The report also makes novel use of Bullet Graphs to simulate a box plot, to show the distribution of response times.
