Thames Valley Adventure Playground

Thames Valley Adventure Playground (TVAP) is a charity that offers a unique range of adventurous, therapeutic and educational play activities in a safe, caring and stimulating environment, catering for both children and adults with all types of disability, however mild or profound.

As children, most of us would take for granted the chance to get out and about, exploring, climbing trees, visiting the park and hanging out with friends, but for many children and adults with a special need, it just isn't possible.  If you have a physical disability, the difficulties are more obvious, but, if you have a learning disability, sensory problems or autism, you may find it hard to relate to other people and to join in their games.

Our CEO and CFO visited the playground in 2016 to see the work TVAP were doing.  To understand that TVAP is the only environment of its kind in the whole of the southeast of England and that TVAP has very limited government support was eye-opening.   Learning that there were many open weeks in the TVAP Guardianship program we signed up to support one week a month and are very proud to continue doing this.

In 2019 we have provided additional support to facilitate additional respite care for very severely handicapped children which has made a huge difference to the families involved.

Everyone at XLCubed is really proud to support TVAP.

Tom Dean

XLCubed has been sponsoring local swimmer Tom Dean to help achieve his performance goals. In swimming terms, these goals are at the very highest level which is representing his country at the Olympic games and hopefully achieving a medal.

Tom swam from age 9 for Maidenhead Marlins, a small local club, and progressed from winning local, county, regional and national age-group titles to represent GB at junior level.  He won the European Junior Title in successive years in his primary event the Individual Medley which involves excellence in all four strokes.

In 2018 he was chosen for the full GB team for the European Championships in Glasgow. He surprised many by being picked for the final of the 4x200 Relay team based on his heat performance and was a key part of the team that won the GOLD medal.

Tom is now studying at Bath University and combining his academic studies with rigorous training at the National Swimming Intensive Training Centre.  An elite swimmer will train early morning and evening most days, both in the pool and gym, for many hours.  This has clearly has paid off as Tom is swimming at the World Championships in Gwanju, North Korea.  We wish him every success both in his individual event, the 200IM, and in the 4x200 relay.

To put Tom's achievement in context - he is now ranked in the Top 20 Swimmers in the world in his chosen events at age 19 and is probably the youngest by some years in this group.  To do this coming from a small club in Maidenhead until the age of 18 is a remarkable testament to his talent and his coaching team.  This talent was recognised when he was awarded with emerging swimmer of the year in 2018 - see his interview here.

His next goal after the world championships will be to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Each country is only allowed 2 swimmers in each event and British Swimming sets extremely challenging qualifying times which are designed to achieve Olympic finals.  It will not be easy - that's for sure - but in sport, as in business, excellence never is.

XLCubed is really proud to support Tom in his goal for Olympic success and look forward to continuing to do that in this next important year.
